Now that the summer is here and the nights are getting lighter and hotter, we all tend to suffer from sleepless nights, more so than others. Sleep is vital for your body and brain as this is the time where your body repairs and rejuvenates itself from the day's activities. Hay fever is also a cause of sleepless nights, feeling blocked up and not being able to breathe properly.
There are many causes to sleepless nights especially in the summer months, but there are simple solutions:
For those who live on main roads or have noise neighbours who like to have a BBQ party throughout the night, using sleeping ear plugs are a great solution. They block out the disrupting noises and allow you to fall to sleep peacefully.
If you are a sufferer of hay fever and tablets just don't seem to do the trick any more, using nasal strips will open up the nasal passages gently allowing you to breathe properly through your nose. This can help you get the much needed sleep you need, instead of trying to sleep with a blocked nose.
The sunny nights are lovely up until you want to go to sleep. The majority of people can only sleep when it is dark or completely pitch black, so instead of forking out for blackout blinds, why not just cover your eyes? Eye shades or eye masks are fantastic for blocking out the light and are extremely comfortable to wear as they fit the dimensions of your face.
To get a good night's sleep there are some things that you can do yourself such as:
1. Clean your room! Cluttered rooms lend to a feeling of unrest and remove any "work" related items, such as computers or treadmills so your mind doesn't wander off to the stack of bills that need paid or the fact you missed your workout.
2. Exercise! Daily exercise improves your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. It helps minimize stress, which is big reason why most of us have difficulty falling asleep. Try some light exercise in the evening such as yoga or a brisk walk a few hours before it's time for bed.
3. Rather than the alcohol, have a mug of herbal tea meant to calm your body such as kava, chamomile or valerian root.
4. Take a warm bath before bed with pure essential lavender oil. Just sprinkle several drops of this oil in your bath and let the aroma of lavender do its magic! Lavender increases the release of serotonin (calming hormone) helping relieve stress and produce a calm feeling in the body. Never apply undiluted pure essential oils directly to your skin as they are quite strong.
